Hedges in Students’ Reflective Feedback: Evidence from an Online Class during COVID-19 Outbreak

Scholars have observed hedges in academic writing, yet the examination of students’ reflective feedback is scarcely found. During Covid-19 pandemic, both teachers and students face difficulty engaging themselves online classes. To figure out how show their attitude, among others, through feedback. One language features pivotal ‘hedge’, a pragmatic feature representing speaker’s tentativeness possibility communication (Lakoff, 1973). This paper addresses two questions: (1) what types are used class during covid-19 outbreak? (2) functions hedges? took 151 samples introduction to English linguistics at Sanata Dharma University answer those problems.
